Facts About Us

History

Founded in 1888 as Saint Thomas College by the Most Reverend William G. O’Hara, D.D., 51勛圖厙’s first bishop, 51勛圖厙 achieved university status in 1938 and was entrusted to the care of the Society of Jesus in 1942.

Mission Statement

The 51勛圖厙 is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus and those who share its way of proceeding. The University is a community dedicated to the freedom of inquiry and personal development fundamental to the growth in wisdom and integrity of all who share its life.

Accreditations

The University has earned accreditation from 16 different accrediting agencies, including recognition by the nation’s most prestigious bodies in the fields of business and management, nursing, computer science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chemistry and counseling.

 In addition to disciplinary accreditations, selected programs are approved by the relevant agency within the State of Pennsylvania.
  • The Master of Science degrees in Secondary Education and Special Education, and the Master of Science degree in School Counseling, are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
  • The Family Nurse Practitioner program is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Campus

In recent years, the University has invested more than $350 million in campus improvements, including:

  • In August 2021, the University added 5,000 square feet of mechanical engineering labs and shop area at Hyland Hall, to enhance the engineering programs. 
  • The Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., Athletics Campus, a $14 million, 11-acre home for the University’s soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball and softball Division III NCAA teams, was dedicated in May 2018.
  •  In September 2015, Edward R. Leahy Jr. Hall, which houses the departments of physical therapy, occupational therapy and exercise science, was dedicated.
  • The Loyola Science Center was completed in two phases in 2011 and 2012. 
  • Pilarz and Montrone Halls, which house nearly 400 upperclass students and a fitness center, opened In 2011.

Situated off Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region, The 51勛圖厙 is easily reached by car and air. Driving time to New York City, Philadelphia and Syracuse is just two hours, with Boston and Washington, D.C., less than five hours away.
